Day 999: Mount Whitney Trail to Lone Pine Lake - Perseid's - John Muir Wilderness - Inyo National Forest

Lone Pine Lake

Day 999 * Hike #1294 * New Track #996
Mount Whitney Trail to Lone Pine Lake - Lone Pine, CA
Sunday August 11, 2013
My Tripometer: 1.75 Hours * 3 Miles * +1850 Feet

Mount Whitney, here we come!

***CAUTION:
Before attempting this insane hike, it's important that you're prepared for the challenge.  One way to do this is to follow my blog day by day for 1000 consecutive days.  This I assure you will adequately train your body to tackle this beast.

Technically speaking, the Mount Whitney Trail is not a very difficult hike.  That said, it is a Very Long round trip and the elevation may play a trick on your mind.  There are many suggested warm up hikes to help you prepare for this big bad boy.

  • Day 929: Mt. Baldy  The longer loop trail that I took this day covered nearly 11 miles and climbed more than 4000 Feet in elevation.  The steep incline is actually more challenging than any of the switchbacks on the Whitney Trail.  You will gain 1000 feet per mile for four straight miles.  It's relentless!  Whereas Mt. Whitney inclines you 6000 feet over 11 miles (about half the grade).  Mt. Baldy will peak you at 10000 Feet, therefore it is a good warm up.

  • San Gorgonio Mountain - Wikipedia  This is the highest peak in Southern California at 11503 Feet.  There are several different ways to combat this trail and usually the best way to do it is to haul in the heavy pack to camp overnight at one of the lower camping spots.  Like Whitney, this hike requires a permit.  Obtaining a permit for this hike is much easier than gaining access to Mt. Whitney through the lottery.  Adam, who joined us on this Whitney adventure, attempted this trek a month ago with Nick, who also joined us.  Unfortunately they fell about 1.5 miles short of the peak due to a lack of water.  With no doubt I know that Nick would have made the summit but he hung back with Adam and others and missed the opportunity.  As for me, I've been wanting to tackle this beast but never got around to it :(

  • Days 976 - 978: Mineral King Loop  Last month I completed this 28 mile loop on a solo mission over a three day period.  Reaching elevations of nearly 12000 Feet, twice, you will climb over 8000 feet in total elevation gain to complete this mission.  With a 50 pound heavy pack on your back, this trek will surely adjust your body accordingly in preparation for Whitney.

  • There are many numerous hikes that will help you prepare for Mt. Whitney.  You can scroll through my blog and attempt some of my more difficult climbs or surf the web to see what you can come up with on your own.  In final, leading up to the day of the hike, I recommend you adjust your body to the elevation shock.  No better place than to visit where I was at yesterday: Day 998: Elevation Acclamation at Horseshoe Meadows

***Now, let's go for a hike...

From the lower overflow parking area - Here Comes Mount Whitney...

Directions:
From the Town of Lone Pine, turn up Whitney Portal Road from the 395 and take this all the way to the end.  Check out my visit last year for more pics and information around the trailhead: Day 578: Whitney Portal.

It was already mid afternoon when we reached the portal today.  Parking near the trailhead was completely full, thus we had to park in the lower overflow parking area.  No big deal, add 0.1 miles to your hike and 50 feet of elevation gain!

Trailhead - 8360 Feet
That's Nick already powering ahead with no shirt on!  He is a machine when it comes to the trails.  Pacing behind him second is our new comer, Ian.  Over this 1000 day adventure I've hiked with all of these guys at least once, but no more than once.  For the most part, I hiked solo much of the time.  Prior to my 1000 Day adventure I probably went on ten overnight hikes with Nick and four with Adam.  Speaking of Adam, he would be my hiking companion for the majority of this adventure.  Thanks buddy for hanging with me...

The trail begins with a series of Switchbacks

Welcome to Mt. Whitney.  No, these early on switchbacks are not part of the infamous 97 but they will begin to wear you down, especially if you are wearing a heavy pack like us.

Cross Carillon Creek and then Lone Pine Creek

During the dry summer months, all creek crossing will be relatively simple.  However, I follow a guy on Facebook who trekked this mountain at the same time I was coming back from Mineral King.  Due to the monsoon in Mexico, the moisture made it's way up to the Sequoia's and this gentle creek turned into a raging white water rapid.  These guys started their day hike journey at 1:00am and did not reach back to this point until after sundown.  In the dark they linked hands with one another and safely made it across the creek, but it was not easy.  Their total round trip was 19 hours!

Officially entering the Joun Muir Wilderness - Inyo National Forest

The Mount Whitney Trail marks the end of the 200+ mile John Muir Trail.  Along the way we intersected several people finishing up this long journey.  The fastest guy claimed that this was his 12th day to complete the mission.  A family of three was on Day #15.  Their daughter had pulled her quad three days prior and was hurting significantly in effort to complete the long trek.  We also ran into a guy who was on Day #25, hey, that's more my style and pace...

Back to the trail...

The Lincoln Log Bridge...

Careful, the 2nd log is a bit loose but all others are sturdy...

Finally off the switchback and leveling out into the thin forest

2.5 miles in, Lone Pine Lake Junction (turn left)

0.1 miles from the junction, Lone Pine Lake - Elevation ~10000 Feet

The journey to this lake is between 2.5 to 3.0 miles, depends on who you ask.  I've seen some websites call out the elevation gain at only 1000 feet, but there is at least 1700 feet in gain.  Mostly up all the way there, with a bit of fluctuation I'm calling it 18000 feet, but this includes my quarter mile loop around the lake as well...

Setting up our tents

From the back side of the lake

Mt. Whitney is so White!  The granite mountain is so remarkably. white!  The entire mountain is like the top of Mt. Baldy, but there are so many lakes which do keep things interesting...

From the edge of the lake, looking out over Lone Pine

No Camp Fires allowed up here.  Moreover, with just 2 overnight permits we needed to keep a low profile.  We camped at the front part of the lake and warmed up our food on our miniature stoves.  Between the four of us we had three stoves, all under 1 pound each.

As the sun went down, the crescent moon rose and then quickly dropped again.  We needed to get some sleep ahead of our early departure time tomorrow.  However, the clear dark night sky was offering some of the best views of the Perseid's.  The meteor shower was brilliant!  The Milky Way appeared more fabulous at Horseshoe Meadows but tonight I got to see the most amazing shooting star ever!

It's like I had been waiting my whole life for this!  How many times have I gone out to see shooting stars to come up completely disappointed?  Well, not this time.  It was like Mickey Mouse waiving his wand for Walt Disney.  This pure white shooting star was thick, very thick.  It moved slow, like in instant replay slow.  The tail was like a pointer dog with no wag.  It was like drawing a line with an exploding star at the end, and then it was over.  It lasted a couple of seconds.  I saw the whole thing and when it did go away, it was like it was still there!  Ian saw the tail end of it, pun not intended.

A few minutes later, I saw another amazing site.  It was a much dimmer stream of light but it flew across 75% of the night sky at the speed of light.  Totally insane!

Anyhow, Nick and Adam were already snoring logs and with less than 6 hours to day hike departure time, Ian and I called it lights out.  Stay tuned, Tomorrow will be Day #1000 - My summit to Mt. Whitney!

Day 998: Horseshoe Meadows

10,000 Feet closer to the clouds and the sun

Day 998 * Hike #1293 * New Track #995
Horseshoe Meadows - Lone Pine, CA
Saturday August 10, 2013
My Tripometer: 1.25 Hours * 2.5 Miles * +100 Feet

Alabama Hills: Gunga Din - Carry Grant 1938
Saturday morning I picked up Ian and we drove out to Lone Pine.  We stopped by the visitor center to secure our Whitney Day Permits and we came up one overnight Permit as well.  Nick and Adam would be joining us later that day so our hope was to obtain 4 overnight permits for Sunday night.  More on this later...

After the visitor center, we grabbed a bite to eat at the Mt. Whitney Cafe.  I ate here last year with my parents and it only seems fitting to eat here again ahead of the Mt. Whitney trek.  My burger was bomb, loved it.  I think I ordered the Alabama Hills Burger loaded with mushrooms!

Speaking of Alabama Hills, it's impossible to miss these rock formations when heading up to Whitney.  The picture above was taken on the corner of Whitney Portal Road and Horseshoe Meadows Road.  For more on the Alabama Hills, check out my visits from last year: Day 578: Alabama Hills & Day 577: Alabama Hills

Horseshoe Meadows (Trailhead)

Directions:
Follow the driving directions from Day 577: Horseshoe Meadows

Unlike last time, Horseshoe Meadows was completely full.  We actually nabbed the final tent plot/  I believe there are only 24 walk in spots available but by sundown, there must have been at least 40 tents set up around the camping area.  Of those people, not sure how many people actually voluntarily paid the $6.00 overnight fee.

The system up here is so flawed that if one wanted to, they could just easily remove the money from the drop box.  I believe a ranger came by once during our visit to collect the money but they really don't monitor what's going on up here.

Wood gathering is prohibited and you are only suppose to stay one night but I've heard from others that you can stay multiple days and no one really cares.  In regards to the wood, Ian and I bought some at the corner store in Lone Pine so we were legit.

Last year with Ayden we climbed up to Cottonwood Pass.  Rather than strain the legs on a hard push duplicate track, Ian and I wandered out into the meadows.  Originally I wanted to drive back to New Army Pass and trek a mile or so there, but I made the foolish mistake by not filling up my gas tank in Lone Pine.  I noticed the fuel light on about half way up to Horseshoe Meadows.  Rather than turning back, I drove up 10,000 feet figuring I could just coast down the next morning.  Anyhow, with the risk of running out of fuel, we did not drive over to the New Army Pass trailhead.  Instead, we did this...

Walking across the back meadow

I looked up in the sky - Awesome!

Way Cool!

Trekking across the meadow

We navigated through the fallen trees

Opened up to another meadow - Moo...

Okay, I get it now.  Horseshoe Meadows.  This is the same meadow which wraps around like a horseshoe.  I bet this area looks absolutely amazing from a helicopter.  Wait, can they fly this high??

Yee-Haw!

Where's the ranch at???

We walked across the back end of the horseshoe

WARNING!

The next three pictures are quite gruesome.  We stumbled upon a dead cow.  We saw ravens picking at it and later found out that two bears had been eating this cow just yesterday.  Okay, ready, scroll below to read the rest of this blogpost...

...continuing...

The back end of the meadow...

Ian snapping pictures...

His fancy camera and tripod - I'm jealous

We got back to camp just before sundown.  The temperature began to drop quickly so we began our fire for light, warmth and dinner.  We spoke to a random guy who climbed Mt. Langley from the Cottonwood Pass Trailhead.  This day hike nearly mirrors the difficulty of Whitney by climbing to 14000 feet and 22 miles round trip.  Being far less popular, the isolation of this trek I'm sure was amazing!

I forgot the guy's name but he told us about the bears eating at the cow yesterday.  Dude, I have still never seen a bear in the wild.  So close, ya know...

While we were talking, it just happened that the wincing crescent moon had set and we were in the middle of one of the largest meteor showers in years.  So lucky!  The Milky Way was Way Awesome.  I've never seen it so clearly before.  The gaseous light of the galaxy scrolled across the middle of the night sky like a mohawk.  The shooting stars lit brilliantly like Mickey Mouse waiving his wand for Disney.

After dinner, we cleaned up in the dark and prepared for bed.  Just then, Nick and Adam wandered into camp.  Right on, so now the four of us were all together and the conquest to Whitney would soon begin.

Good Morning from my tent

Ian slept in the hammock and Nick and Adam shared the other tent.  Man, it was cold.  We estimate 29 degrees.  Ice was everywhere and the butter left out was completely frozen to the core.  Ian's feet were numb and I did not sleep very well.  That said, Adam slept like a bear; at least that's what he sounded like.

After breakfast and breaking down the tents, we trekked back to the meadow with the guy to see if by chance the bears were back for the cow.  However, no such luck.

From 10000 Feet back down to 3700 Feet in Lone Pine.  I cruised down the long wide open Horseshoe Meadows Road on fumes.  For being at 10000 feet, this has to be one of the best roads ever to climb to that kind of elevation.  I barely made it into the gas station before stalling out.  I filled up over 19 gallons and all this time I thought I had an 18 gallon tank.

We then went to the Visitor Center in hopes to pick up three more overnight permits.  As it turns out, they hold a second lottery for walk in permits at 11:00 every day.  We made it just in time and I picked #2!  This was great because they called up #'s 1-2-3.  Unfortunately, they did not have any overnight openings!

For the next two hours, we were negotiating with another party who was looking for more day permits.  To make a very very very long story short, we gave her two of our day passes for one of her overnight permits.  The process was anything but simple.  End result, we had two overnight permits and two day hike permits for Mt. Whitney.

We drove over to the Alabama Hills Cafe for lunch to discuss our options.  The place was cramped and busy but I will say, the food was darn good!  In any event, we decided to roll the dice and begin our journey to Mt. Whitney today.

Playing with the probability, we decided to hike to Lone Pine Lake today.  The journey is roughly 2.5 miles and +1700 Feet elevation gain from the portal.  Moreover, it's not technically in the Whitney Zone so you don't need a day permit to hike in this area,  That said, you are still required to hold an overnight permit if you were to camp here.

I read online somewhere that the fine for camping without a permit is $5,000.00.  Well, this is not true.  The fine is somewhere in the neighborhood of $130.  So, the risk is really no big deal from a financial standpoint.  However, if caught, the ranger could turn you around back to the portal.  Man, would that suck!

What would happen to us?  Stay tuned.  Day #1000 and my pursuit to summit Mt. Whitney is next.  1000 Days leading up to this point.  Will it actually happen, or will I fail?

Day 994 - 997: Memory Lane

Day 1: November 16, 2010

Day 994 * Hike #1287 * New Track #990
Exploring China Flat - Oak Park, CA
Tuesday August 6, 2013
My Tripometer: 1.75 Hours * 4.25 Miles * +1200 Feet

Early Sunset from Day #1

With Mt. Whitney and Day #1000 coming this weekend, I took today to revisit my Day #1 adventure at China Flat.  Of course, on Day 1 I did not actually make it all the way to the flat but the dramatic quick incline and rush back before the early sunset  was well remembered.

Man, it's been a long time!  Following my footsteps from Day 1: China Flat, I did not alternate to the left as I did that day.  Instead I continued straight and down into the flat.  This route was similar to my visit on Day 235: Simi Peak - China Flat.  However, rather than hanging left to Simi Peak I turned right to wander a bit within the flat.

I did not run and for awhile I just paused down in the flat to soak it all in.  I knew that today would be my last somewhat strenuous day until, the climb to the top of the highest peak of the contiguous United States!

Strolling back down memory lane, I just replayed my first video while writing this post: YouTube: 16 Hikes Complete - November 2010.  This may be a bit of a bummer though.  I think YouTube blocked most of my videos because I edited them to music!  For some reason I can still play it off my computer but I've been told by others that it is blocked.

Back then, my intention was to make a new video each month.  Well, that didn't pan out.  Blogging and editing pictures and videos has taken more time than the hiking itself.  Initially I was super excited about this adventure but as the days racked up into the triple digits, it felt more like a chore at times.  Still, the excitement for hiking and exploring thrived me to the finish line and I did it!  I Hiked 1000 New Trails in 1000 Days, but it was anything but easy...

Day 995 * Hike #1288 * New Track #991
Santa Rosa Trail - Thousand Oaks, CA
Wednesday August 7, 2013
My Tripometer: 1.5 Hours * 3.5 Miles * +450 Feet

Sunset from Day #2

Keeping it close to work and easy on the legs, I revisited my Day #2 Hike at Wildwood Park.  However, with plenty of sunlight, I did not rush nor did I get "lost".  By not getting lost and condensing this loop trail correctly, I was able to complete a New Track, number 991 only needing 9 trails in the next five days to reach 1000!

Check on pics and details from this hike Day #2: Santa Rosa Trail or http://usahiker.blog.com.  I rarely ever go to the USA blog, but I see there that my pics from this day are x'd out.  I do not know why...

Day 996 * Hike #1289 * New Track #992
Old Baldwin Road - Ojai, CA
Thursday August 8, 2013
My Tripometer: 1 Hour * 2 Miles * +25 Feet

Day 4: Above the Clouds

Scrolling through the first week of my blog and duplicating some of those trails I came across this picture from Day #4.  No, I did not hike here on Day #996, but this may be my favorite picture on this whole blog so I decided to share it again...

Today however was intended for wood gathering.  I would be heading up to Horseshoe meadows on Saturday and knowing you cannot gather wood there, my intention was to wander around these parts to bring back some wood.  Instead, I just did some wandering and decided to forget about it.

I came back here once before with Ayden -- too lazy right now to try to find that blogpost but its on here somewhere.  I recall then we were looking for geocaches.  Ah, someone once turned me on to them but I became so frustrated.  I guess I just like hiking.  Anyhow, no wood here but I did manage to criss-cross several different trails over the river to confirm a new track....

Day 996 * Hike #1290 * New Track #993
De La Garrigue Rd - Santa Ana Creek - Ojai, CA
Thursday August 8, 2013
My Tripometer: 1 Hour * 1.5 Miles * +25 Feet

So the Santa Ana Creek system dribbles water into Lake Casitas.  Not much happening this time of year but around the corner from Old Baldwin I drove to De La Garrigue Rd and conspicuously walked around maybe where I shouldn't have been.  No, I did not go all the way to Lake Casitas but I looked it up on Google afterward and it appeared so...

Day 996 * Hike #1291 * New Track #994
Casitas Pass Road - Ojai, CA
Thursday August 8, 2013
My Tripometer: 1 Hour * 1 Mile * +50 Feet

I decided to take the 150 past Lake Casitas out to the 101 to head home the long way in a loop.  I've only driven or ridden this route on my bike a few times.  I guess I was still in search of wood but really, I just needed to trounce on some more new ground yet keep it easy and fresh for Whitney.  This new track consists of several stops along the way before hitting the coast.  The road is very hilly and windy.  No real legit hiking trails here after Lake Casitas.  There were some on the right, old school - old map trails.  I've done a couple of them in the past but had no intention today because they would have involved time and energy to climb the long foothills of the Los Padres.  No thank you.  Back to the VTA and back to bed...

Day 997 * Hike #1292 * Duplicate Track
Arroyo Verde - Ventura, CA
Friday August 9, 2013
My Tripometer: 30 Minutes * 1.25 Miles * +150 Feet

I took the day off work and intended to gather firewood and hike a couple of new trails.  I wasn't exactly sure what my new count was but I knew what day I was on and felt like I was behind.  However, between getting an oil change and working at Chill Out unexpectedly, this little morning hike was all I could muster out.  I didn't even hike from my backyard on this one.  I drove around to the park itself and completed just one figure 8 walk on the low trails.

Later that night, after Chill Out, I began to pack.  I was done by 10:00, watched some TV and then went to bed...

On Monday morning I called off work to watch the Eagles vs the Surf Club.  Before the game began I did my ritual warm up hike around the soccer fields.  It was a much different atmosphere being that most of the teams had been eliminated...

Cottonwood Creek Park - Encinitas, CA
Monday August 5, 2013
My Tripometer: 45 Minutes * 1.25 Miles * +25 Feet

Now that the tournament was over we began to head back to Ventura.  It was only 10:00am so we had all day to conquer this 3 hour drive.  Needing more hikes under the belt, we drove one city up along I-5 and exited at Encinitas Blvd.  This park is on the right and there is a a hiking trail that treks to the north.

Unfortunately, after the long weekend of events, my camera batteries were dead.  Hence the reason why I had no pictures of the Semi Final game.  I wasted the shot on the sprinklers :).

Day 993 * Hike #1282* New Track #985
Batiquitos Lagoon - Encinitas, CA
Monday August 5, 2013
My Tripometer: 45 Minutes * 1.25 Miles * +0 Feet

Next stop along the route was the Batiquitos Lagoon.  We parked at the state beach and then walked inland around the lagoon.  It wasn't very accessible so we kept it short here...

Day 993 * Hike #1283* New Track #986
Carlsbad State Beach - Aqua Hedionda - Cannon Park - Carlsbad, CA
Monday August 5, 2013
My Tripometer: 45 Minutes * 1.25 Miles * +25 Feet

We parked near the small Cannon Park and walked along Carlsbad State Beach.  This opened up to another lagoon known as Aqua Hedionda.  It was barely noon, a bit chilly still and kept our route short, back to the car in search for lunch and another trek...

Day 993 * Hike #1284* New Track #987
Oceanside Pier - Oceanside, CA
Monday August 5, 2013
My Tripometer: 1.5 Hours * 1.5 Miles * +25 Feet

Bypassing the Buena Visata Lagoon we made our next stop in the city of Oceanside and walked along the beach and the pier.  We also had lunch :)

San Onofre State Park
After Oceanside we were basically forced onto the freeway to keep heading north due to the military base Camp Pendleton as seen in the title pic for this blogpost.  I took at the camera after the long rest and was able to muster out a few pics before it went dead again.

San Mateo Campground

You park along a street which heads up a hill to San Mateo Campground.  If you turn back the other way on the other side of the freeway there is a long cement path which will take you to the beach.  There were many people parked and hiking with their surf boards and what not.  Interesting area anyway...

Day 993 * Hike #1286* New Track #989
Ralph B Clark Regional Park - Buena Park, CA
Monday August 5, 2013
My Tripometer: 45 Minutes * 1 Mile * +0 Feet

We drove quite a way north until finally stopping here.  This happened because I've already tackled most of the coastal parks and then the freeway heads inland.  The day was growing old, my wife and girl were getting frustrated and we did need to head back to Port Hueneme to cover the late shift at Chill Out Frozen Yogurt.

With just one week to go, I need 11 hikes to reach 1000 New Locations in as many days...

Day #992 * Hike #1276 * New Track #980
Solana Beach - California
Sunday August 4, 2013
My Tripometer: 45 Minutes * 1.5 Miles * +75 Feet

Solana Beach
On the other side of the I-5 down from the soccer fields is the Del Mar Race Track.  Just beyond that is Solana Beach.  We had several hours to spare until the next game began so here we go.  I need to collect New Track's to par 1000 Hikes in 1000 Days.  Let's explore and get at least one mile under my belt for each journey...

Trailhead
We parked the car down by the beach and then walked up hill.  This trail ended quite quickly but then we walked through the neighborhood streets above the bluff...

Fletcher Cove

Open House Bluff
Through the streets of the Solana Palisades neighborhood we stopped by an open house.  This 2 bedroom plus small den and 2 bath thousand square foot home was going for $2.6 million.  The views were stunning, but dam, are you crazy.  The house was so outdated and cramped.  For this kind of money you can get a modern large home in Malibu or buy five of my houses in Ventura :)

We followed the roadway all the way around and bypassed jumping on the I-5 to head back to the soccer fields.  We still had a little time and I was trying to feel my way out.  Back into Del Mar, we found this trailhead very close to San Dieguito Park.

We are inland on the eastern end of the map
So pretty much, the trails connect - Well heck, everything connects, huh?!  With not much time, Alyssa and Jess remained in the car while I jogged this one...
