Day #390 * Hike #434 * New Track #414
Friday December 9, 2011 (New Zealand)
Kitekite Falls - New Zealand
My Tripometer: 1 1/2 Hours * 2.25 Miles * +325 Feet

 View Point from Piha Road

Day 390 continued after Karekare falls.  We drove back up Karekare Road and turned left on Piha.  Not too far down the road you will notice the viewpoint on your left (above picture).  Since we were at a beach just over an hour prior, we searched for a trail to climb.  There are plenty in the area including the Tasman Lookout Trail, but we chose to hike Kitekite Falls; Great Decision.  However, getting to this trail was slightly tricky.  According to the rangers instructions and map from the visitor center, I am to take Piha Road to Glen Esk and turn right.  Problem is, there is no Glen Esk?  I asked a local and he said to go that way to Glen Esk, but still didn't see it??  I tried forcing my car down a narrow aly and like a fool, nearly got stuck, but lets not talk about that.  --OMG, it was so easy.  If you happen to be reading this blog and you're looking for the falls, just take Piha Road all the way down and when you see the street sign in the picture below, turn right where "Accomodation" is pointing.  Really, that easy?  The road ends at the trailhead!

One minute drive down this road to the trailhead

 Trailhead

Nice shaded forest with easy elevation for ~30 minutes

Many alternate trails; the main route is easy to follow

Falls can be seen from the distance; amazing!

Canyoning daredevils abseiling (repelling) next to the falls

 The water is cold!

Carrying extra weight from fine food and beer, I built up a good sweat.  My wife on the otherhand floats on the trail like a feather.  I love you Jess...
