DAY 28: OXNARD SHORES & HOLLYWOOD BEACH

 28 DAY SUMMARY: 101.25 Miles  +18,175 Feet

DAY 28: OXNARD SHORES & HOLLYWOOD BEACH
Miles:  6.0
Elevation Gain:  50 Feet
Time: 3.5 Hours
Difficulty (1-10):  6
Reward (1-10): 3
Description: Hike along the Beach and then back across the sand and dunes.
Directions: From the 101 Freeway in Ventura, exit Seaward.  Turn left on Harbor and drive toward Oxnard.  Turn right on Fifth Street and then park on the street by the beach.

An 80 degree day in Ventura, so why not go to the beach?  Meanwhile, it's Football Sunday and the game in Minneapolis was canceled due to bad weather.  Hmm, doesn't Minnesota have a dome?  Well, yes, but there was so much snow that the dome caved in...

I started at Fifth Street with Ayden and Domino and began walking along the water.  Nearly two hours later, we ran out of real estate.  High tide or low tide, it doesn't matter.  There's enough sand out here to fill in Lake Erie!  The only real negative to the hike was, no shoes!  It's fun dipping your feet in the water but six miles of hiking with bare feet can be quite painful.  There were some rocks at first but the majority of the beach was soft sand.  Near the end, tiny stones layered on the water line and it felt like stepping on glass.  No big deal, a few steps inland and ahhh, what a relief.

We reached the harbor and Ayden was like, "Can't we ask those people for food?"  He was referring to the Rudder Room, a bar at the end of Hollywood Beach.  Houses align the entire three mile stretch until we reached this spot with people and volley ball nets.  Oxnard Shores is so vast that there was not any specific area with a cluster of people.  Granted, it's winter and not many people are considering the beach as their weekend activity.
On the way back, rather than trekking along the water, we walked by the houses.  Eventually we hit the sand dunes, thus giving me roughly 50 feet of total elevation gain.  We passed the Embassy Suites Hotel, where I used to work renting funny bicycles.  We caught the sunset over the islands and reached our car just as it became dark.  Today was a good day.  I will upload some pictures on facebook:

***Check out the video that I made for Alyssa.  It has nothing to do with hiking.  If you watch this, you may be witnessing the best 9-year-old soccer player, ever:
