DAY 83: TANGERINE FALLS

DAY 83: TANGERINE FALLS
Date: Saturday February 5, 2011
Miles: 3.5
Elevation Gain900 Feet
Time: 2.5 Hours
Difficulty: Intense!  Not good for dogs or kids!
Reward: 100+ Foot Waterfall!
Description:
The lower portion of the trail is very simple.  Bring your dogs and kids here and take a bath in the pools of water underneath dozens of small waterfalls.  Venture on and there are small caves and more rewarding water pools a mile up.  The final half mile should only be attempted by an in-shape adult human.
Where: Montecito, CA
Directions: From the 101 Freeway in Ventura, drive North toward Santa Barbara.  Exit on Olive Mill Rd (the third Montecito exit) and turn right.  Stay straight past the stop sign as the road turns into Hot Springs Road.  Keep going up the hill and then turn left on Mountain Drive.  The street is narrow and will wind and swerve for about two miles.  Just before the creek crossing, there are usually a lot of cars parked and the

Cold Springs Trailhead
Don't be alarmed when trail signs don't mention Tangerine Falls.  Trust me, it's there and well worth the hike!  Follow the trail and stream uphill for a quarter mile until you reach the West Fork Trail to the left.  There is an old rusty sign identifying the trail and you will have to cross the creek.  The trail begins just before Kevin's Bench.

Many places to refresh in the first quarter mile
Look for the cave rock on your left

Your dogs and kids can slide thru the tunnels
The trail is shaded and scenic the entire way!
IMPORTANT!  You will see a white sign on the left and about 20 feet later, the main Left Fork Trail will continue up and to the left.  The Middle Fork Trail will go down and to the right.  There is no sign but you want to head down to the creek.  Continue to follow the creek up.  Look for the most worn footpath because the trail is not always obvious.  You'll have to cross the creek several times and negotiate rock boulders, which may be tricky in some places.  The higher up you go, the steeper it becomes.
Moderate Rock Climbing

There are two large pools of water near the top.  This is a great place to take a dip and cool off!

 Tangerine Falls!

You Made it to the top!  On a clear day, the view out over the ocean is spectacular.  Relax, unwrap your sandwich and embrace the moment.  Mission accomplished!
