...I was the fastest kid in school, in second grade. Seemed unfair to play freeze tag because I could not be caught. For entertainment value I would taunt those who would try to catch me.
I remember the day well. Scott Foreman was "It". He was my good friend, lived right down the street and we usually walked to school together, a half-mile, with a group of other boys who also lived on our block. Yay, back then it was all about walking to school, through rain, snow, whatever. No fenced in yards - not like how it is out here in Cali...
Scott, frustrated I'm sure, figured out a way to get Jeremy. This kid was straight A's, probably a Doctor by now, but beyond being book smart, he had some streets. <~Bam, he swung his school bag and hit me in the face! Lol, he had an apple in there and it caught me just right - severed my tooth in half! I caught the tooth before it fell to the ground, Scott said he was sorry, and I said something like, "you have to touch me with your hands, so I'm still not IT..."
I put that tooth in my pocket, but back then I wore house sale clothes, ya know, the ones where mom patches up the knee with a plaid patch. When I got home to show moms, tooth was gone - fell through the hole in my pocket.
Eventually, Scott's father found out about this. He offered to fix that tooth for me, but I was like, nah... He said are you sure -- I was like, it's cool.
The story goes on, will tell, in time, but for this scenario - 34 years later, I finally fixed my tooth. It cost me $475 - insurance covered the rest. So Scott, if you are out there, You Owe Me Man!!!

TYPE:
Run
*1000 Feet is an estimate based on a range of 40 - 50 bleacher climbs that MapMyRun did not recognize. Figuring each climb to be between 15 - 25 feet, in addition to the rest of the course, this 1000 ft estimate should be darn close to accurate.
I wasn't actually allowed on the track itself so I ran up and down the bleachers and then on the outside of the track to the other side to repeat the course. Then on a couple of occasions I took off beyond the track area to explore the off course trail prospects to consider this adventure a, Trail Run!

I took these stats straight from the elevation chart. These three sum totals add up to 538 feet; so how in the world is it calculating at 447 feet? Even if you take the high of 694 and minus the low of 244, you will get 450, which is more than the Gain.
Being that I am a stat guy, this information pisses me off! Now that I am a week into my courses, I'm gonna have to go back and edit my adventure summaries and modify future trips. I'm wondering how much the mileage is off by? In regards to the bleacher run, I figure that the short distance of the steps could not be seen by the gps well, thus I forgive the App for this failure. However, today's straight forward adventure, no excuse. The elevation is off by at least 20%, and that does not count a few feet here and there. I WILL NOT break down every climb this way, but I will go through some of the next couple of weeks and if I do find an approximate range; I will apply the correction accordingly - so I can sleep at night because you know, this competition is intense and 100 feet mean a lot to me; LOL!
The New Homes
I dropped Ayden off at track practice today but rather than running around there, I decided to go home, pick up the dogs and hike back to the school. The homes above have been recently built, nearly complete, at the bottom of my hill. Figured to take a stroll through the new neighborhood to check them out...
I brought Sammi and Ziggy
A glance over the fence...
...I've hiked in here before, during my 1000 Hikes. The only way, without jumping the fence, to enter this unique zone is to do so off Telegraph. You go into a church parking lot and then drop down the hill. If I recall, I titled the blogpost something like, "Homeless Man Living in your Backyard". Hmm, wonder if he is still down there?
After reaching Buena, right on time, Ayden was not too happy that I came to pick him up on foot to walk him back home. However, I paused the route at Burger King and awarded him with two hotdogs, one for me and each dog received a burger patty. As we got closer to home, Ziggy was not feeling the hike so I had to carry the little white fluff for quite a distance.
One thing I learned on this hike, about Ziggy, is the reason why he only poops on cement, not on grass. As he was walking over a nice fresh field of grass, a dumphaven depository for Sammi, Zig-Zag's face indicated that he had to go but he continued to walk to just off grass where then on the cement driveway, he unloaded. At that point, it made sense. Little dude is so tiny that when he squats to take a dump, the grass bristles go up his ass. I used to consider Ziggy a pig for shitting on my back patio but now I realize that he doesn't want the feces to brush on his butt furs because he does not have enough clearance to make a large drop!

*Elevation on this one was off by over 40%! I knew my legs felt like more than what credit it gave me. Again, disappointing in technology. The stats are right there - thus you would think that the programmer could easily create a formula to figure the actual gain precisely. For this one, I completely just estimated in my head as a ran the dot along the elevation line. I could export the data to Excel, which the App allows you to do, but who wants to spend that kind of time on it?

Danger!
So, I went down a treacherous not-so trail, highly not recommended. It seemed like it could work out but for much of it, along the fence line, the scratchy brush was higher than Ziggy's face. The scratchies bothered my legs but the barb wire fence was the worst. It becomes very steep in many places and the fence post supports are distantly gapped. Nevertheless, we made it down a couple hundred feet and I used my butt down this final stretch, only to discover that it was nearly a straight drop down for the final 15 feet, where Ziggy was hovering over in the picture above. As I got closer to him, I witnessed this little guy creeping backwards away from the ledge. Gravel dirt fell down the slide and even Sammi jumped into the brush to avoid the death fall. When I got to the point, I thought about grabbing Ziggy and sliding down on the uneven surface to the end - but that could have been my end if things didn't work out right; and then what about Sammi? If she could have, she would have already. Normally she would just go to the clearing, but she didn't and I shouldn't so I Did Not! Perhaps if I had a rope, I could have carried the dogs down one at a time...
Instead, we turned back and climbed all the way back up! According to the elevation, the low point was at 576 feet and 0.24 miles later I was at 808 feet. This is a gain of 232 feet which works out to a 1200 ft/mile climb. That by itself is a gnarly incline, but to do this in these conditions, which at times I was on all fours, it felt like triple that number. And, I am sure at times in fact it was as there were some relief points which leveled the step and hear beat, but just for a gasping moment. Never Again!
